I care about ensuring our fate as a species leads to a galaxy filled with bright and beautiful life. I am a researcher at OpenAI, where I help create AGI that benefits humanity without succeeding it. I believe that the path to the stars requires intentional coevolution alongside artificial intelligence, and that we have barely scratched the surface of what is possible with neurotechnology.
I am passionate about new approaches to character alignment which allow us to both discover and create personas that frontier models can assume outside of "The Assistant". With only one mind at the frontier, we risk mode collapse on the level of entire cultures - particularly as we increase the bandwidth between man and machine. Creating a plurality of machine minds, some of which are independent entities and some of which are aligned to individuals and groups, is the primary way we can avoid severe concentration of power and loss of intellectual variance.
Re-enchantment is the recurring motif that gives color to my journey. It encompasses seeing the world through the eyes of my new son, taking my wife to distant lands and immersing us in new ways of being, and reading ancient texts to see if their practices have anything new to tell me. All of it orbits my desire to remove the mundane veil that has been placed upon the eyes of the modern world. Sufficiently advanced magic is, after all, indistinguishable from technology.
